Perfect length means nothing if the color is off. A seamless color match is what makes extensions undetectable, and it's one of the biggest skills that separates a good install from a great one. Here's how our stylists choose shades.
1. Match the mid-lengths and ends
Your client's roots and the hair closest to her scalp are usually the darkest and freshest. The extensions blend into her mid-lengths and ends, so that's where to match. Pull a section from underneath, where the extensions will actually sit.
2. Use natural light
Salon lighting can be warm or cool and throws off your read. Check the shade near a window in daylight whenever you can, and look at the hair from more than one angle.
3. Use a color ring
Holding real hair against hers beats any photo on a screen. A Maven & Mane Color Ring has a sample of every shade, so you can test against her hair in the chair.
4. Don't be afraid to blend two shades
Most natural hair isn't one flat color. Combining two shades, such as a brighter blonde with a softer one, adds dimension and helps the extensions disappear into lived-in color. Our shade pages list which shades pair well together.
5. Lean on pre-rooted and balayaged shades
Our extensions come pre-rooted and balayaged, so the root shadow and dimension are already built in. Choose the shade whose root and ends both work with her color.
6. Plan for toning
If you're between shades, a gloss or toner after the install can bring everything together. Talk to your client about a toning appointment every few months to keep her shade fresh.
